I purchased some crab legs from Winn Dixie where I live here in Florida. Apparently, someone didn't take the time or effort when cleaning to place or remove the crab legs from the glass case. When I came home and prepared a fancy dinner for my husband and myself I didn't notice anything unusual. We toasted with champaine, then dug in. I cracked the crab leg and took a succulent piece of meat from the leg and plopped it into my mouth. I immediately felt a rush of ammonia or bleach filling my mouth and throat. My eyes burned, my throat burned. Coughing and gagging the wretched piece of meat out onto my plate. Lovely. Took it back to the store. They said sorry and get this...."would you like us to replace your crab legs?" NO THANKS!!!!! Confused

Okay, right off the bat I need to clarify that I am aware that this topic is extremely old, but there just something I need to say about it.

If your seafood tastes like ammonia, that doesn't mean whoever cleaned the seafood displayed doused it in ammonia or other cleaning agents. When seafood goes bad, it smells and tastes like ammonia due to the breakdown of the urea (a component of human urine as well, which is why old pee smells like ammonia). Apparently the fishy smell we all know is a milder version of the smell of ammonia. Anyway, I myself have had shrimp that tasted like ammonia. If the crab legs had been doused in actual ammonia, the shells would have the ammonia on it and possibly the part where the legs were cut off, but it would be very hard for the ammonia to penetrate all the way through to the flesh.

I say those crab legs went bad.
