COMMENTS on the FREEDOM CD

But first, a word from our sponsor...

Freedom's release date was October 13th although some were shipped before
that date so it was possible for someone to actually have a CD in their
hands by the 13th...Friday the 13th! The CDs sold quickly and by December
1st 1995 I was only taking reservations as very few CDs remained. I did
not advertise very heavly (only on the internet via newsletters, a demo,
and such). I mailed out slightly over 400 packages (roughly 700 of the
800 CDs produced) during the past three-four months. I am happy to
announce the project was a success and all the CDs have been sold. I do
have some spare art (CD insert/backliner) so if you are interested
in obtaining the inserts send me your address and how many inserts you want.

Below are a BUNCH of comments I collected regarding the FREEDOM CD. Most
are positive, some offer suggestion, and few are negative. I tried to remember
to save as many CD comments as possible but I'm sure there many I left out on
accident. Some messages with unrelated topics were edited.

Enjoy,
dmw@gate.net

Lets get the SHOW on the road....

Got the stuff today; You really packed that envelope!
4 CDS! More than I was expecting :>.

The music...much better than Escape (in almost every aspect). The
stickers: Like you said, the flag and the intel fake came out the best.

The CDROM.. I don't have a cdrom drive..so I dunno yet.

Anyways, thanks a bunch for the Cds and the extra stuff...
Any gfx help you might need in the future, I'm willing to help!

Once again... you managed to produce a quality Demoscene CD, for close
to nothing.
.. you gotta be proud of that.

I'll let you get back to stuffing envelopes and processing requests :>

okay, well, here is some of my humble opinion, some arts look a bit too
dark, exspecialy the front cover one, but still look nice anyway. about the
audio CD, I think you used(or recorded) too much air or reverb (or whatever
you call
it) in some songs, exspecially in the song "fate." The last one,
"Night of Dream," sound very real, like it's be composed using a synthesizer
rather than a tracker. those vocal recording sound a bit weird through,
I guess probably of the equipment. ohh, and those collage arts are a bit
too small.

I guess that about it, not much to say about the data one.

My "Freedom" CD's arrived yesterday and I really must congratulate you on
an excellent job. The Artwork is wonderful and the sound quality of the
music is fantastic.

You seem to view "Escape" as a learning process and it is obvious that
lessons were learned and improved upon.

It is also such a convience to have all these demos at one's fingertips
instead of on disc or tape.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hiya Dan,

I felt that I needed to write to you to congratulate you on Freedom.
I really wasn't expecting it to look so nice and professional. (I think
I was expecting more like Maelcum's FTZ CD with black & white insert on
regular paper).. But wow! I got it last week sometime, gave the other one
to my friend, "that Joe guy".. The d/a CD is recorded with very high quality,
the cdrom well organized (I can free up lots of megs on my hard drive now,
and make around 25 disks blank :)), and the art on the inserts is awesome..
You really had some talented guys doing art.. :) (my sticker looks ok :>)
It's too bad that you won't be making these CDs in the future (like for MC4)
but I can see if it's a lot of trouble dealing with The Party and Assembly
organizers... It'd really be awesome if you continued making them. I wish
now that I was more involved in the demo scene when MC3 and Escape happened..
Oh well.. Anyways, great job!

Dan !!

Hey I got Freedom in the mail yesterday :) :) Very Happy !! hahah.. thanx
a ton Dan, the recording seems to have gone very well.

I'll take this moment too to congratulate you, Snowman and the rest of
the MC3 team for the professional organisation and production of the CD.
It really has brought the PC Demo scene and the music (mod) scene to new
levels.

This is obvious in the quality of music on the CD. Many of the tunes are
radio quality and don't sound like they were done in mod format at all!

Hehe.. I played it for my mum and she was surprised at what the computer
can do :) she liked Necros tune (I'm still surprised it didn't win) but
of course started squabbling on about how much time I must have wasted
composing mine *grin* even though she did like the slow section :)

The gfx art is much better on this CD and one CD of the cdrom archive !
wow.. pity you couldn't include most of the asm95 and tp94 stuff.

Anyway, looking forward to the next MC (if there's one in the works!),
another congrats on a great effort and for all the time you guys must
have put into it. I'm sure you're pleased with the results!

Till next time,

that it's just beyond what I ever expected.... Congrats on the whole
thing, and I'm sure you and everyone else did a LOT of work to put that
sucker together! Wow... it's just great!

Anyways, if you plan on another CD for the future, just let me know and
I'll help out if you need it.... maybe even with the next version of it,
you could make lots of extra copies, and send it to specific people to
have it distributed at Bootleg music stores... there's a really great
place here that takes demo-tapes and CDs, and I'm sure there's plenty more
around North America.... Man, PC Music could get major recognition from
that kind of thing.

Oh, and if the CDs are going rather quick, I have an order for
about..... 5 CDs just in the city... And when I collect their money, I'll
send itto you asap..... So reserve 5 now just in case they run out. :)

Date: Sun, 29 Oct 1995 23:05:59 +0100 (MET)

Hello Dan!

Okay, I'm happy that there are still some Freedom pieces left :) There is
one more thing I wanted to ask you... I downloaded the dirlist from Freedom
and found out, that there aren't that many demos, basically, Freedom looks
like a second volume of Escape, I mean, there are things gathered on the
site since Escape was pressed. Unfortunately, I didn't order Escape, since I
didn't have the CDROM drive at that time yet and I wasn't wise enough to buy
it anyway :-) Aren't you thinking about a reprint of Escape, probably in a
smaller circulation (although that would increase the price)? I think some
other people could be interested in this too, at least it seems to be worth
considering :) Or... is the Escape CD _absolutely_ sold out? I'd be quite
interested in buying a copy.

I was thinking of burning all the demos on a CD, just for my personal use,
maybe for my friends too, to get rid of all the floppies :) And, I like the
idea of demos being sorted in several cathegories, like groups, parties,
alphabetically, etc. On the demosite it's quite easy, since UNIX has links.
I was thinking about making a program, that would make links on DOS, so that
one file could appear in more directories and I want to use it on my CD. I
think I'll do it as soon as I'll have some time. Probably you could be
interested in this, for Freedom 2 (or whatever the name will be... the
logical sequence suggests "Liberty" or "Independence" :) I'll mail you when
it's finished.

Hey Dan! That CD came in the mail, quite fast I might add. I
just got it today, and so far, I am VERY impressed! I am
listening to the CD portion right now. Very nice indeed. I
really liked what you have done with Leviathan's song. Wow.
Heh. Exept I think there was too much flanging in Necros' song.
But anyway, give yourself a pat on the back (See, you didn't need
me!). Anyway, an unfortunate thing happened. I guess my jewel
case hinge broke off in the shipping process.. But that is ok!
=) Thanks for the 2 stickers too. And I tried to fit that
Freedom Inside on my computer case, but it is a little too
big.. I might just cut it a little smaller and slap it on!
Gonna check out the Data portion after this.. Oh yeah, Markell's
song seems to be recorded too loud (gain too high?). And also
like how you added sooooooooo much bass to the songs.. Heh.
That was good. Later!

Yes I got them a few days ago.

I've never liked synthetisizermusic nor techno, and I'm not starting
today.
It's not that great. But heck, some people _do_ like it, so I'm sure
it's
a good CD.
I never got the point, but was the case so that numbers 1-15 were the
compotunes and 16-20 extra tunes you had asked for, like you did me? If
this was the case, you should have either asked my permission for
cutting
the song - which I hadn't gave you, but maybe had sent you some shorter
tune which I have a lot of - or simply dropped it off the CD.
I gave you permission to put the song on the CD as it was, not the way
you did. Well sure, I know my music is all PD, and I'm not in the
business
for fame or money (would I spend approx. 20 hrs making a freeware tune
if
I was?), and I know that one day I'll find out that someone is getting

No, I'm not mad at you, I won't start rumors about you, that all in

talking.
But I am disappointed at you. Sorry.

This is the shit, Dan... This is a fucking testiment to the Demo scene.
No shit. Even to the artwork on the cover, this is a high quality production.
VERY professional. I love the way you put the Audio CD together. I thought
that the format of the demo disk was very good as well, like browsing at
hornet. This thing KICKS ASS. Thank you.
Now if I only had a GUS... Oh well.
Know where I can get a used copy of the other Demo CD collection...
ol' whatzitzname... ;)

Hi Dan

Thanks a lot for the free Freedom CD. It's very impressive! The art is way
better than that of Escape (the front cover at least, I'm not sure about
the inlet and back ;) ) and the sound quality (of the audio CD) is too!
There are some distortions in a few of the songs, but that is probably due
to the song samples. At least that's what I assume from my experience with
the 'music scene'.

I haven't checked into the ROM part yet, heh heh, because I don't have a
CD-ROM yet. But I will be getting one mucho pronto.

ok, cya

Hi Dan...

Thanks for the CDs! I got them a week ago, last Tuesday. Everything
went almost perfectly... except that even though you you did mark
that package as a gift, the Finnish Customs STILL got in the way!!
That's no fault of yours, of course. I guess that they'll interfere
with ANYTHING that has a reported value of more than $40 or something...
Well, luckily I could convince the customs officer that I...[edited]

Anyway, I've now been listening to the audio CD almost the whole week.
And I must say that it's just _excellent_!! Now there's something that
probably couldn't be identified as mod music if it was played on
radio, for example. While waiting for Freedom, I didn't download but
a couple of tunes from MC3... and now upon hearing more of them, I'll
have to say that it was a quality contest indeed. Those tracks that
got on the CD were such a diverse bunch that I'd have had BIG
difficulties in rating them against each other if I'd been a judge
for MC3... If I wanted to make one complaint, it might be about
those last 2 tunes that had also vocals in them. They still didn't
feel like they had their recording levels just exactly correctly
set up... for example, Night of Dreams still feels like somewhat
lacking in treble... but of course, this might not be your fault
at all, perhaps you were just given the master for those songs and
you just copied it to the final CD master?

All in all, big thanks for you and Hornet for making the Freedom
CD reality. It's just as great as you've been advertizing all along... :)
I feel that this is something that the demoscene might need even more...
CD-ROMs produced at cost, for the scene... (all of us don't have spare
1-gig hard disks lying around, waiting to be filled with demos... :)
The party CDs might have their place too, but perhaps more like an
alternative... Anyway, thanks!

You're welcome ;-).

> Hope you like the CD...

Well if you want to hear my opinion, it has surprised me for some good things
but it also has some bad things.

For example, I didn't know about de code directory, it's a useful one, and
I have found some really interesting files, like the 486 timing or the
386 book.

But I thought that the CD would free me of having the HD full of demos,
because it would be an extensive recopilation of all the demos until now,
at least the ones presented to the most demo contests. But it's not that
way. The ASM95 subdirectory is really poor, or for example there isn't any
of the intros of the CYBOMAN trilogy. I know it's not all your fault,
because of the commercialization of the demo contests, but anyway, the
demos directory is indeed quite poor.

But it's a good CD on its overall 8-).

Luis.

Again, could have been much better... :(
Premilinary score? 3.5 out of 10... :(
Score for the MC3 that is...btw, is John? still around? (can't remember his

only got one of his reply and it was abroud a month already...since then,

Data? That's the reason why i wanted Freedom for! :)

Sorry if it has been quite some bad comments...
Hmm...maybe i can help out a bit in MC4 next year when i'm back in Malaysia?
The audio bit that is...

Mucho mucho gracias, really, the CD is here and it utterly kix ass. I
think that I have to repay you, but in something else in money. How about
a papyrus? I hear these are pretty expensive and rare out there. I think
I might be able to scratch one up ,they are very cheap around here . (Is
that spelled Papyrus or Papirus now that I think about it? :), oh well,
never mind. ) . Anyway, the CD's , both the Audio and the Data are REALLY
great. The Audio CD is in very high quality ni my 10 year old CD player,
and the data CD has everything I ever wanted and more . Thank you, very
much. ;).

Can't thank you enough,
Nir.

I see your point. :-)

However, the NAID organizers might be willing to drop the cash to do so.
Have you emailed them (Naid@Autoroute.net) to discuss the possibility?

BTW: I am thouroughly pleased with Freedom. The audio is nice to
have around, and the data CDROM is just priceless. Your articles
(demobook stuff) is easily worth the cost of the CDROM. They were
quite enjoyable, even if you tend to ramble. (Joke!)

Hi Dan!

I finally got your package of FREEDOM-CD's and I really must say it is one
of the best CD's I ever got. Especially the music-directory with its massive
collection of module- and sample-files made an outstanding standard.
Many thanx for this superb and professionaly-made CD!!!!!!

Hey, I got my Freedom CD, and it's great!
It pretty much kills Escape in every aspect, from the
sound quality, cover art, cd art, and songs. Thanks
for it man, even though the only song I really enjoy
on it is the song by Nemesis... never heard that
song in the past... Great work, for sure.
Congratulations on some fine work. Is there going
to be a third CD? Is there even going to be an MC4?
If there are, then I can't wait... Later!!!

Kefrens mod I've been hunting for two years - the first mod I ever heard! =)

Thanks again, Dan! :)

Yeah, I know you put loads of work into it, I feel a little guilty for not
absolutely adoring it... :]

>There have been a few people not liking the music disc but I get the
>impression it is more for the music side of things then a quality issue.

I'm afraid for me it -was- a quality issue. Example: Nemesis' song had no
panning, that was carried straight over to the CD. Bass was rather, uh,
strong. :} The flanging throughout the whole of Second Thoughts and The
Crossing sounded like an odd choice... other than that though... fine.

I really wish I could be there for the making of the MC4 audio CD, I have
some ideas... like mixing each piece of the winning songs separately. The
percussion mixed differently to the bass mixed differently to the lead mixed
differently to the chords mixed differently to... etc. You get the idea? Of
course, I imagine you'd have far too much to do to go into that sort of
complexity, which is why I wish I could be there... I'd be willing to do all
the mixing myself. *sigh*

Ah well... c'est la vie. :I
