I had a mixed feeling when I bought this item. There are some great points like the work they put on the interface/user help but on the other side, there aren't so many demos in it. There are a few coding helps and gfx too, but it's not easy to find good things in the mass of average/crappy things you'll find here. You'll find the essential of the 1996/1997 releases...

I am a guy who learned the demoscene at 1997(Late isn't it) I wanted to buy a CD with demos so that I wouldn't get tired downloading demos in diskettes from the Hornet Archive. I saw that there excists Hornet underground 1 and 2. But the only CD I could found was the second version. --------------------- Hornet underground volume 2 contains stuff about demoscene which was found at the Hornet Archive from 1996-1997. It also contains some older demos from previous years that hadn't been put before in the archive from 1993 to 1995. This CD contains: - 687 Demos and Intros - 312 Coding Tutorials and Source Examples - 243 Graphics Images, Disks, and Programs - 25 Diskmags - 258 Party Invitations, Results, and Reports - 18 Issues of the Newsletter DemoNews - 34 Issues of the Newsletter TraxWeekly ---------------------- The bad think about this CD is that it has not so much good demos as much you will find in Hornet Underground volume 1. The reasons for this are: 1) 1996-1997 wasn't so good years for the demoscene as the previous year was. 2) I see that many good demos that I can find in Hornet at 1996-1997 aren't inside the CD. For example FASHION, CAERO, HEADACHE and I am only looking at the DEMO AWARDS 1996-1997 at Hornet. Some of them weren't realesed before 1997 and that's the reason why the wheren't put in the CD. CAERO was made before 1995 and so they didn't put it. Although it was released at 1996. I can't see some demos from BYTERAPERS for example. I think that many good demos were not on this CD and I don't know why. Beacuse when I saw the contents of the CD I thinked that 1996-1997 had very few good demos. But when I was searching for demos at 1996-1997 at the Hornet Archive I saw many good demos that I wanted to see but they weren't on the CD.(Maybe they were realesed later?) I really don't know why this was happened. But you will find some good demos in the CD like some TBL releases (ASTRAL BLUR,JIZZ,STASH), and other cool demos like ROBOTNIK,303,LATEX,TOASTED,INSIDE and a 2NDREALITY PARODY (SQRT(2) REALITY) There must be many others that I forgot. ----------------- So isn't this CD worth buying? No it is cool beacuse except demos there are some other cool stuff: The coding tutorials that you used to see in the Hornet Archive is all in this CD!!!!!!!!(But always only until 1997) I think that the most significant of Hornet Underground 2 is this whole collection of the coding tutorials. There are also Graphic Images, and programms. Party reports from 1994 until 1997, party results from 1995-1997. Invitations to parties from 1993 to 1997, and pictures from parties 1995-1997. 25 Diskmags of course. The cool thing that I liked is that you can find in this CD some pictures from demomakers. ---------------------- Well I haven't achieved to look all the CD yet but I think that there are some cool things for that you must buy the HORNET UNDERGROUND VOLUME 2. 1) If you want to have a collection of demos from 1996-1997.(Of course some important demos aren't in the CD beacuse of some reasons which I don't know. If Hornet continued to make a CD you may seen them in a HORNET UNDERGROUND 3 cd.) 2) The cool stuff with coding tutorials and source. 3) All the other cool stuff that were not excisted in the Hornet Underground volume 1.(The Hornet Underground 1 had 1250 demos from 1987-1995 and it had too much cool demos!) Michael Kargas P.S.1 The sad thing is that I couldn't find Hornet underground volume 1. But I downloaded from the University all the demos until 1995(!) and I took them in a CD. P.S.2 The sader thing is that now Ι understood why many many cool demos where not on the CD. The HORNET UNDERGROUND volume 1 had also some demos until 1996. And there are many cool demos that were not on this CD!!! P.S.3 The sadest thing is that I am hungry. Ok that's a review, it is not a chat! -------------------------------------------- Κανένας Έλληνας demomaniac εκεί πέρα; -------------------------------------------- Ohh, about the interface? Well this CD has an interface for DOS and another for WINDOWS to see the files from the CD with some descriptions and decompress them, and run them. Well they are not so well done interfaces(The DOS is a simple TEXT graphic-but good- interface. There are no well designed with lot's of graphics interfaces). This doesn't matter me too much(you?). But I would like some menus where you can see the party results and then decompress and run the demos that won (Well there excists party results but I want to go to the Assembly results 96 for example and see the results and say "Wow the "Computer Junk" demo has beaten "Third Reality". I would like to see this demo. And choose the demo from the results.) OK this CD is cool. I bought it for 5000 drachmas (20 dollars.) But if you find Hornet Underground 1 and 2 then take at first the first volume beacuse you will be a lucky guy (I can't find it but I took the demos I needed from the University). Hornet Underground 2 has newer demos but you can find other cool demo stuff and a lot of coding. Ok that's all folks!
