OLD NEWS

28 December 1999

It has been slightly over six months since the last update and enough activity has been happening to warrent an update. To the news...

MISC INFO/UPCOMING RELEASES:

If you know of any scene CD's left off this list or not in the database please drop me an e-mail (dmw@fusecon.com) so I can keep this database somewhat current. CD-R's probably won't be added to the database but I will give them a mention within this newsletter.

NEW CDS ADDED TO THE DATABASE:

9 June 1999

Moving at the speed of techno...

A little bit of feedback came in and I was able to updated and fix the following concerns:

5 June 1999

New CDs added to the database include:

IN OTHER NEWS...

Dan Nicholson's Area51 label (i.e. kosmic.org) continues to produce and release decent audio CD's at a staggering rate. Unfortunately all of the products are still being released on CD-R's. Hopefully, some day Maelcum will take the plunge and go "silver," jump on the UPC bandwagon, and get some of his label's releases out there.

I spotted Bjorn Lynne's Wolves of the God's available at CDNOW and Amazon.com for under $13! I've seen this CD in stock but currently it appears to be back ordered by both companies.

Bjorn Lynne has two soundtrack CD's:Pig Detective and Seven Kingdoms available for purchase only thru mp3.com. Each of these mp3 created CD's cost $6.99.

Surprisingly, or perhaps not, there has been no news or new releases coming out of Zyklop, TRSI & Fairlight Recordz, and Trax In Space. All appear to be struggling.

In fact, Scope Records is shutting its doors for the next several months because its founder Matthias H. Risse) will be busy with exams and misc. other projects. Sadly I suspect those doors won't be opening again.

Okay, enough bad news. On the brighter side c64audio will shortly be releasing the long awaited follow up to the successful C-64 - Back In Time CD. Great C-64 remixes from the likes of Jogeir, Martin G., Ron Hubbard, Ben D, and several others will be found on this second volume.

Last, but not least, Jeff Van Audenhove and Dan Wright are making progress on their joint production "scene" CD entitled audiophonik - music for the scene generation. The CD will contain ten to fourteen songs from some of the best and most well known 90's scene musicians. The expected release date is early Autumn. E-mail Dan Wright if you are interested in being put on the reserve/announcement list.

14 February 1999

Thanks to Maelcum (Dan Nicholson) and The Hacker I now have the CD cover art for all the CDs listed in the CD database.

For those interested in buying Bjorn Lynne's CDs in the states (instead of importing them) you can find both Void and Wizard of the Winds at The Ultimate Band List for $11.99 and at AB-CD for $14.97--not including shipping. I highly recommend purchasing Void which, coincidentally, is being sold by all of the on-line music stores. The trick to getting your CD listed with all of the on-line music sellers is to have your CD distributed/carried by The Valley. Cyclops has apparently succeeded in doing this with Void. If you are an independent and want wider distribution I recommend checking out The Orchard.

11 February 1999

New CDs added to the database include:

  • Tracked Worx '98 - a double (data) CD of tracked music, MP3's, and etc. from Maz Sound.
  • One Night - Simon V's debut album. This audio CD contains a mix of old re-edited "hits" and newer Drum and Bass tracks.
  • 2BADSHEEP - This is Sidewinder second release. It is another techno/dance musical explosion of sorts.
  • Worms: Armageddon - A 4-track CD (25 minutes) which contains two songs from the game and two others not in the game but based on the game.
  • Wolves of the Gods - Bjorn Lynne's follow-up album to last years Wizard of the Winds album.

I'm still on the lookout for the Kosmic 3 Archive and Binary Expansion CD cover art. Maelcum, anyone, Maelcum.

Bjorn Lynne's ISMS is now available from Scope Records and Bjorn's lynnemusic web page.

Rene Christensen (aka Zteel) is in the process of selling off most of his Demoscene CD Shop scene CDs to Zyklop. So, if you are interested in getting some scene CDs for a good price you better act quickly.

I've gotten a couple more scene CDs since I've last written and wanted to briefly comment on them:

  • Opportunity Volume 1 - This CD has quite an array of known scene musicians (Skaven, Bjorn Lynne, Purple Motion, Vivid, Wave, etc.) but isn't as good as some of the other compilations I've heard (Kosmic 2 or any of the Music Contest CDs). Perhaps the problem lies in the fact that most of the songs develop too slowly. But don't take my word for it; listen (to at least the MP3's) and judge for yourself.

  • Witchwood - I was hoping for something along the lines of Lost Eden when I purchased this CD. Unfortunately, for me, it didn't come close. There was a bit too much piano and medieval sounding songs. I could also do without Bjorn's singing on the last song--no offense Bjorn.

  • Hobbits & Spaceships - This is an older CD released by Bjorn Lynne in which he (under his alias Dr. Awesome) collaborated with Fleshbrain. This, without a doubt, is my favorite of the three. Its music is a little quicker then the latter two and quite original with its touch of the classic demo songs.

Everytime I update the latest news file I will move the old news here in case you need to look back or missed something.

5 February 1999

My counter for this site somehow got reset to zero. I'm not quite sure why though I suspect it could be due to the .cgi trying to update the counter while someone else is accessing/updating it.

I'll have more news about upcoming CDs as soon as I get all the album covers and descriptions.

19 January 1999

I've got a big Maz Sound update for you:

  • MAZZIVE INJECTION NO. 1 INSTRUMENTS has been renamed to NO. 1 INSTRUMENTS and the price for this CD no longer includes shipping.
  • MAZZIVE INJECTION TRACKED WORX has been renamed to TRACKED WORX '97 and reduced in price.
  • Maz Sound has recently released a double CD of tracked music, MP3's, and etc. called Tracked Worx '98. It is selling for $17 not including shipping.
  • Maz is also the producer of Vivid's audio CD entitled Simon V. The music is a mix of old re-edited "hits" and newer Drum and Bass tracks. It sells for $14.

The latter two CDs have not been added to the CD database at this time.

18 January 1999
Quick updates:

- Zyklop now distributes the Vocal Elements, ISMS, and Opportunity CDs
- ISMS will be officially released during the last week of January.
- Todd Z. is the only distributor of the DREAMS 2 CD in the US.

13 January 1999

Maelcum (aka Dan Nicholson) is now taking pre-orders for the Kosmic Archives 3: 1998 dual CD. The early bird pricing is $12 and anticipated ship date was the 11th of January. Kosmic is going through some tough times so Dan's ship date on the K3 CD may have slipped a bit. Limited information and no cover art has been made available regarding this CD.

Also on the Kosmic front Maelcum's low grey cloud album is now available for download from the net. However, the full MP3 album takes up 84 megabytes.

Strange things are brewing within TRSI Recordz headquarters these days. It seems the Kentlex Trade Group has bought and taken over TRSI & Fairlight Recordz. BUT, hold on to your hats, Alex, former owner of TRSI Recordz, is also the owner of Kentlex. I'm not about to try to figure this one out but it does seems as if things will be business as usual at TRSI Recordz.

There has been no word from TRSI Recordz on the release date of Cyberlogik 4.0.

Dreams 2 CD banner
Darkness still has copies of DREAMS 2 available. Click on the banner above for the web site.

Nebula released its Interstellar Harmony, Volume One on the first of January. This CD contains 14 audio tracks by such artist as Bjorn Lynne, Hunz, Skaven, Mysterium, Nemesis, and several others. There is also 70 data tracks(?) containing software, articles, tutorials, and artist profiles/interviews. I am not sure whether this CD has been produced as a Mixed-Mode (sounds like it) or CD Extra (where the data track is hidden).

Bjorn Lynne placed 4th in the Best Band on the Net contest with a heavy metal ballad type tune--go figure. Bjorn's latest CD (under his alter ego DIVINORUM) ISMS is due out in the next week or two. You can check out Scope Records or Bjorn Lynne's web page for more information about this upcoming CD.

Lynne's other soon to be released CDs include:
Worms: Armageddon - A 4-track CD (25 minutes) which will contain two songs from the game and two others not in the game but based on the game.
Wolves of the Gods - Is a fantasy-inspired symphonic/progressive rock, inspired by Allan Cole's novel "Wolves of the Gods."

Both these and the ISMS CD should all be coming out within the next several months.

Sidewinder has a new album due out this February called 2 Bad Sheep. Check out Sidewinder's web page for the details.

Rene Christensen (aka Zteel) wants to sell off all his scene CDs and get out of the demoscene distribution business. Be sure to check out his Demoscene CD Shop and help him out. For those interested he is one of the few who sell out of print Bjorn Lynne CDs.

For anyone who can help I'm missing the cover art for the following CDs: Binary Expansion and Kosmic Archives 3.

And last but not least, Jeff (Darkness) and I are working on an audio compilation CD similar to Scope Records Opportunity. Our CD will probably be release Q2/Q3 of 1999 and more information will be available as the project moves forward. Stay tuned.

18 October 1998

The CD database now has the cover art for all of the CDs except one--Binary Expansion. I should have that art shortly.

I'm no longer using the ISMS CD as a testing ground for submitting reviews and rating CDs. In fact, there is no "testing" CD review page. So if you have something to say about a CD then by all means post your comments and rate the CD. Then perhaps this database will actually become useful.

I removed all foreign distributors for the SCENE CDs created by Zyklop Software. Apparently Zyklop was ripped off by them. I also added Zyklop as the distributor of several CDs.

12 October 1998

Wired magazine issue 6.10 posed a few questions to the great Sci-fi/Fantasy writer Ray Bradbury. The last question asked of Mr. Bradbury and his (edited) comment:

So, no Internet, no computer, not even a driver's license. Is the modern
          world passing you by?

You don't miss what you've never had... Put me in a room with a pad and a
pencil and set me up against a hundred people with a hundred computers -
I'll outcreate every goddamn sonofabitch in the room.
Apparently Mr. Bradbury has never seen a demo. And it is damn hard to say you'll outcreate someone when you don't know what you are up against. Ray Bradbury is a very creative and talented writer even though he has lost a step or two in the past several years. Like Mr. Bradbury we all have our creative side--some are good at programming, some music, some sports, some writing, and so on. Sometimes it's difficult to determine where you fit in. The lucky ones know early on and stick with it to become greatness. The CDs listed in this database are a tribute to greatness, and the talent of many. Every CD is a piece of creativity; a dream someone had which became became reality. And this CD database, or whatever you want to call it exist to keep those dreams and hopes alive.

8 October 1998

I added the ability to sort the CD list using the ARTIST and DATE fields. The ARTIST field is sorted by last name, first name, then CD title. The DATE field is sorted in descending order (newest to oldest) by year, month then CD title. Satisfied?

7 October 1998

I changed a few things around here and made the CD list so that each CD has its own file. Within the file is the same information found in the original demo/music CD list in addition to a picture of the CDs cover and the ability to rate and comment on the CD.

Because of the new format I will no longer be maintaining the old demo/music scene CD list but I will continue to keep a copy of the old list for those who liked it better.

If you have any comments and suggestions on this new format please send me some e-mail

In creating the new list a couple CDs got dropped due several factors. The following CDs got dropped: ACE #5 (not released), Black Philes 1 & 2 (no info), BNOPLUB (CD-R), Marcus Lenngren's demo CD-R (CD-R), History CD (CD-R), The Ultrasound Experience (not really a "scene" CD), Cyberlogik 4.5 (not released), Technobees (does not exist-DNE), Parallel Dimensions (DNE), Lithium Dreams (not a "scene" CD). Of course there are some CDs on the list that push the edge of being a "scene" CD (depending on ones definition).

I'm missing CD covers for the following CDs: Assembly 94, Assembly 96, X95, Binary Expansion, and I could use a better cover for the DUNE CD. I would appreciate if it anyone could send these pictures my way (approx: 200x200).

A couple other items of note: I increased the FONT size for readability. There are 81 CDs listed in the database! You can use HTML formatting when submitting your reviews. The database looks the nicest if you are running 104x768 (hope so). Those suckers, I mean poor fellows, running in 640x480 can still navigate but it won't be as pretty. Each CD review page will fit, quite nicely, on a 640x480 screen though. Course, when you throw in the frame on the left it screws things up a little (sorry about that). I know how difficult a GOOD monitor is to find as I bought and returned 3 17 inch monitors before settling on one that is pretty good (at least it is VERY sharp at 1024x768). Finally, I did run several tests on the database and hopefully got out all the bugs (this is not a canned CGI). So, if you happen to run across any bugs/errors/etc. please let me know.

I'll talk about new CDs next time. For now you can click on the Older News section in the frame to your left. There hasn't been any new releases since then.

27 September 1998

The Lizardking is back. Gustaf Grefberg and Joakim Falk (D-Luxe) got together to produce Fashion8. This CD is similar to the Physiology CD, in that it varies a lot from track to track. It contains everything from hard tension style beats to very atmospheric tracks. More information, including pricing ($16 ppd international) can be found at www.fashion8.scene.org

Trajic of Rhyme has a "simple" instrument CD (CD-R actually) out which contains 585mb of samples (about 7000 .xi files) plus 64mb of programs. Check out his ad at www.pganet.com/scene/audio/ for more information.

The Opportunity CD, which contains music by Bjorn Lynne, Skaven, Purple Motion, and a few others, is now available. Check out www.scoperecords.com for pricing and distributor information.

Bjorn Lynne's VOID CD can now be purchased at various online retailers such as www.cdconnection.com for about $13 not including shipping. Lynne also has a couple songs (under his pseudonym Divinorum) on the recently released Opportunity CD. Lynne's latest CD Isms is due out this coming November--it will be released under a major record label instead of Lynne's own production label as originally intended.

C64: Back in Time is a new CD which features a lot of the best known classic Commodore-64 game-tunes, all re-made and re-arranged with new studio-equipment. This CD is well produced and features many of the most famous songs by Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway, Ben Dalglish, Chris Hülsbeck and others. More info can be found at www.c64audio.com.

Mindtrap co-written by Nitro and Teque Mindtrap is now available. You can hear samples and get more information by visiting www.trakked.com

25 August 1998

Bjorn Lynne (www.lynnemusic.com) is now distributing several CDs including: Dreams2, and Scene Pixel Graphics data CDs and The Best of the Amiga Scene, and Chris Hülsbeck and Allister Brimble audio CDs.

Lynne is working on making his web site into a collective place where you can buy most of the scene-related CDs. For those interested in his older work the Dreamstate album is back in stock. His new album isms will be out soon under Lynne's pseudonym Divinorum. And finally, Jogeir Liljedahl's new CD The Wanderer will be released Q4 of this year on Lynne's record label LynneMusic Productions. For more information visit Lynne's web page.

TRSI Recordz newes release is Electroacidfunk II which contains a mixture of Electro- Trance- Acid and Funk influences from various DJ's/musicians. This CD is such a large project (various labels involved) that it can be found at local retailers or if you want the best price then check out www.amazon.com. Cyberlogik 4.5 is schedualed to be released in October.

The winning Assembly 98 PC demo GATEWAYS mentioned a new audio CD by a couple of the groups musicians. The album is called Mindtrap and more information can be found at www.trakked.com. Basically there is 61 minutes of music on the CD with 14 songs by Nitro and one by Teque. All for $12.

This file can now be viewed from the FRAMES menu. Clicked links are no longer opened inside the framed window. I also fixed up the tables a little bit--in case you are wondering Microsoft IE shows the tables correctly.

All HTML links (not including E-mail) on this list have been verified working as of 21 August 1998.

Morbid Minds has a couple Sampling CD-ROMS out called Morbid Elements Sampling CD-ROM and Vocal Elements Sampling CD-ROM. Check out their web page www.raveordie.com/morbidminds for more details.

I'm not sure what happened to KOSMIC's Opportunity CD. This CD is suppose contain works by Bjorn Lynne, one of the great FC musicians, and a few other notables. If it sounds too good to be true then it probabaly is.

I have heard no word on when A.C.E. #5 is due out. I do know they have taken down their BBS but they plan on putting it back up so users can access via the Internet.

Dreams 2 is officially out. Check out the web page nl.scene.org/dreams2 for further details. PL did a great job and the ART looks fantastic.

Stephane Picq (Dune, Lost Eden) has a new album out called RiverWorld. The www.shooting-star.com says the following about Riverworld:

From stone-age to cyber erae, an attempt to explore the music through time and space, between technology and ethnology. Mixing synths sounds with ethnic instruments, trip-hop rhythms and african percussions with techno-ambient, Riverworld tries to anticipates the multi-ethnic culture of the future. A kind of "sonic snapshot" of our planet, taken from a distant sputnik...

The first compilation of the MMM series containing musics from Dune, Megarace, Dragon Lore 2, Obscura and many others will be available this autumn. Also in preparation are Atlantis 2 and Chronicles of the Black Moon.

19 July 1998

Rene Vinding Christensen's (Tribute CD) E-mail address has been changed to zteel@downstairs.dk I've also changes Rene's name to his handle Zteel. On a sad note the HORNET MOD CDROMs are no longer going to be produced. It seems that Christopher ran into problem of pirating, low sales [ONE REASON--PRICE!], people demanding free copies, and etc.

Snowman (Christopher Mann) is at it again with another Music Contest which is now in its sixth year. There is no word on whether the winners will have their songs published on an Audio CD.

I put a counter at the top of this file so you can see how often this file is getting read. I am also working on making this file a little nicer to view. Since I liked the colors at the HORNET site I did a little copying (shhh).

6 May 1998

A.C.E. has a new E-mail address: chomp2@rocketmail.com and if that doesn't work you might want to try christophe.yvon@cnet.francetelecom.fr As for the A.C.E. #5 CD, well, it is still ON THE WAY. But expect 3-4 CD's in the fifth edition.

If you like songs by Necros you might want to pick up the latest HORNET MODS CD (Volume 2). He has three songs on the Audio CD. Many of the songs on the album placed in last years Music Contest V. There is a lot of good music on the CD--you won't be disappointed. Course the price is a little steep so shop around. Sure, you can download the songs and drop them on a CD-R to carry around with you but if you want to see more cool audio CDs being released please support your local scene.

Bjorn Lynne's new CD "Wizard of the Winds" is now out. Visit www.lynnemusic.com for more information.

The Kosmic Archive CD Volume 2 has finally been released. It is a 2 CD-R collection with B/W art. I'm sorry to see KOSMIC cut corners (CD-R, B/W art) on such a good production. The 12 song Audio CD is worth the price of admission. The music is a little more mellow then FTZ so you might want to avoid this CD if you are looking for any hard techno beats.
