JOB GRIPES It has been just over a year that I have had this account. At first I resented learning UNIX because I felt the VMS/VAX was the best. Well, I have learned otherwise. UNIX is better however, I do notice that this UNIX seems to crash more. Maybe because it is not maintained as well or maybe because it is run off of workstations instead of mini computers. Whatever the reason it seems that no multiuser system is without its problems and crashes. Maybe there will never be a day such a system will stand alone and not need to be maintained. Perhaps it is the programmers who do not make things "stand alone" so they do not lose there jobs. While we are on it let us talk about jobs. Since I have graduated college I have pretty much kept an eye on the job market. A few vacations early/mid Summer hindered some of my progress but not enough to get me discouraged. But now, as I scan the newspapers and trade publications I notice that no one is hiring people with little or no experience. The breaks are just not there--even in college the recruiters wanted "more." Going to interviews, job fairs, and all the reading is enough to get any electrical engineer discouraged. Everyone wants to hire programmers and people to help write/test software. To me a college degree is not necessary for this and I almost feel as if I wasted 5 years of my life if I go into such a field because there is nothing where I want to work--interactive TV, hardware/digital design. I often wonder why things work they way they do. We have the ability to have a huge job search database and make things easier on everyone but don't. Things are tough all over. The Catch-22 of no experience equals no job is a tough cookie to crack. So where are all the opportunities? Some people say our country is losing our edge and I tend to believe this. I believe the reason is called indifference. The care, respect, and moral values of our peoples is being seen less and less nowadays. Some companies follow this same route. Does hard work pay off? Everyone seems to be pushing a good education-- "stay in school" but not many are aiding those who take this advice. So stay in school--forever--and come see us when you have some experience. But remember, we are an EOE, you have to have a minimum of 2 years experience, we prefer minorities, US Citizenship required, and no criminal record. Be sure to sell your self too cause there are a lot of people out there who want the job as well. Brown nose if you have to but do anything. And if you get the job a drug test will be required. Always remember the company comes first. Work work work. I will get a job someday--like everyone else. I have talent, am responsible, motivated, smart, dedicated, and hard working.
